Christmas Carols in London 2012
Christmas carols are essentially hymns with Christmas-themed lyrics, although usually a little more up-beat to celebrate the time of year.
Walking around London in December its not unusual to hear the sounds of carols played in shops, or sung in the streets - often by small groups raising money for charity.
It can be a magical experience when the snow falls and the
christmas lights shine. Groups
of singers may also belt out traditional Christmas songs such as White Christmas, Jingle Bells or Deck The Halls.

Carols by Candlelight 5th December 2011 at 7.30pm at Southwark Cathedral. Christmas carols, choir performances and readings by celebrity friends of the NSPCC.
Christian Aid's Big Christmas Sing and Christmas Light Switch on! - 9th November 2011 at Old Spitalfields Market by Liverpool Street tube station. The singing starts at 5.30pm with a free concert hosted by Suggs (Madness). Guests sing their favourite Christmas hits with local school choirs.
Messiah by Candlelight 10th December 2011 at the Royal Festival Hall. Celebrate Christmas in style with Handel's magnificent choral masterpiece, performed in full 18th Century clothing.
Carol singing in Trafalgar Square - 7 -22 December 2010. Different groups perform Christmas carols in the square, raising funds for voluntary or charitable organisations.
St Paul's Cathedral - Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten (12th December, 1700), Family Carols service (19th December, 1300) and the Christmas Carol Service (23rd December 1600). The Christmas Eve Carol Service and Midnight Eucharist are also popular ways to begin Christmas with well-loved carols sung by the Cathedral Choir.
Giltspur Singers in aid of Cancer Research UK. St Clement Danes, The Strand, London - Tuesday 13th December 2011 at 7.00pm. Choral music and readings for Christmas, plus the opportunity to join in the singing of some well-loved carols.
Christmas Carols in aid of CAADA and the Sara Charlton Foundation St Pancras New Church, Euston Road London from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Carols, gospel singing, mulled wine, mice pies - and for a very worthwhile charity.

Some of the more popular Christmas carols in the UK include God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Oh Little Child of Bethlehem, Silent Night, Away in A Manger, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and Once in Royal David's City.

Santa is a relatively new name for the fellow who brings presents - he was previously known as Old Father Christmas, Sir Christmas, and Lord Christmas. Originally he was pictured wearing a green costume but he was re-branded at the start of the 20th Century and is now generally seen in red.
